I love this post. The guy - @everydaydude - lives in San Francisco. He’s not rich. But he obviously loves his mother (the owner and proprietress of NE PDX bookstore Broadway Books.) The store isn’t doing so well right now. So here’s what he’s come up with:
There are two weeks left before Christmas. My parents are coming to visit me on Christmas day and I want to see my mother smiling.
One of the “tweets” I wrote on twitter the other day said “if you’re in Portland do me a favor??? Buy a book at Broadway Books. No wait, buy 3 of em. I’ll buy you a burrito the next time I’m in town.” The later it got yesterday the more I felt like making (most of) that a reality. So, here’s the deal… I wanted this to be a surprise to a number of my friends and I haven’t told many of them this yet but I’ll be in Portland to visit January 15-19, 2009.
Now, about that burrito. Meet me at Cha Cha Cha on SE Hawthorne in Portland on Friday January 16th at 6PM with a receipt from Broadway Books for over $50 and between today’s date and Christmas and I’m buying your kind ass a burrito. I’ve got about a grand left on my one credit card -told you I was a simpleton- which equates to roughly 166 of you spending at least 50 bucks a pop. That means an additional $8,333 of revenue for a deserving staff at Broadway Books. I’d never feel better about diving into a thousand-dollar hole, all-the-while supporting another local independent business. I suppose I’d have to cap it there, at 166 peeps but here’s to hoping I reach that cap.
Hell, I don’t even buy gifts for anyone any more — but I’ll do what I can to make this guy’s mom smile (plus I love my local bookstore & I can stock up on Chanukah candles & gelt as well, as they’ve got a great Judaica selection.) Wouldn’t you?

I will be buying MYSELF books there… there’s always something I want and I adore this idea, and I don’t even care if I forget about the burrito!
ditto capricious, although I’ll buy mine for gifts.
I can’t thank you enough for re-posting this. My parents mean the world to me and the support I’ve seen today since I wrote this (at 9am) has been amazing. My blog has been visited over 300 times today, up from about 500 times in the last 2 months. Mom has since read the post and called me a prince! I truly look forward to meeting people and thanking everyone individually for coming out and showing some support. It means the world to me. Suppose I’ll have to thank twitter.com as well for helping me spread the good word. Good thing they’re here in San Francisco, perhaps I can thank them in person… with burrito in hand.
This is something I can do! I need to get a book for my daughter and there is always something I can pick up at a book store!
I’m buying $50 in books and i’ll buy that guy a burrito AND a coke for being… f-ing awesome!
I should let you all know that I bought the last box of Chanukah candles tonight. They had tons, but there was a run on them - and now they’re out & won’t get any more in this year (also bought the last bag of milk chocolate gelt, but they still have some dark chocolate left…)
