I have been a lover of spaetzle since I lived in Austria oh so many years ago. It is a type of handmade noodle that one cooking friend called the German gnochi. That isn’t fair because it is prepared all over Europe, not just Germany with much success. Friday’s meal was huge. The serving dish was the same size as what you would expect for bento, but it was piled high with spaetzle, chopped polish sausage, whole cloves of roasted garlic and mixed with sauerkraut. They topped it with sour cream and chives to give it a little extra kick. I dove in at first, not realizing it had whole cloves of roasted garlic only to discover a couple of huge ones in my first few bites. Oh well, I only had 3 meetings that afternoon. Suffer the little children. The meal was so large, I only was able to eat 1/4 and ended up having the leftover for dinner two nights in a row. Talk about a deal. The flavor was exceptional. Everything melded together and tasted homemade, which in some ways it is.

I love Tabor and if you have a chance to get down there, tell them I said hi. Try the Schnitzelwich as every good Portlander should, but also try their other dishes. You won’t be disappointed.

Aaargh! Curse you, dieselboi! I have been serenely happy always getting the chicken version of the schnitzelwich (okay, I had a minor dalliance with the fried muenster sandwich, but I was young). Now I’m going to be keeping an eye out for that heavenly platter of Czech goodness.

Monika and Karel are also ridiculously nice. Over a period of several lunch-orderings, they helped my wife and I plan our trip to the Czech Republic. Not surprisingly, they recommended we visit Tabor (the town), which we did.

Anyhow, I also recommend their goulash — if you haven’t had it before, it’s chunks of pork with a caraway gravy, served with “dumplings” which to most people will seem like bread. Very good, and very traditional.

And I can honestly say that their halusky is the tastiest I’ve ever had, and I’ve had it at a restaurant they recommended in the Czech Republic!

These little write ups you’ve been doing are perfect! I start working downtown in about 2 weeks and you’re giving me a good beginning as to good places for food. Not that there aren’t a ton of places to choose from, but you DO help narrow it down a bit.

I’m inherently lazy when it comes to lunch… what?!
