Brrr! It was freezing last night. I’m starting to covet a new wool blanket. As far as wool goes, Grandpa got it right. If you want to stay warm all day when it’s raining and you aren’t moving around much, wool is definitely the way to go. When I go fishing, I’ve started to wear a wicking layer, then wool, then a rubber rain coat. Works like a charm.
Some go so far as to call it the wonder fiber. That might just be baaaable though – (I couldn’t resist that one, sorry.)
For bedding, wool is also nice because it breathes and it keeps your temperature nice and stable.
I’ve got my eye on this Monterey Blanket from Pendleton Woolen Mills. I would also like to get this Oregon Sesquicentennial Blanket and hang it on a wall.
Is anyone else breaking out the winter blankets yet?

No wool blankets yet, but I was thinking about long sleeves and/or wool underwear while biking this morning!
I love wool… except for the itchies! However the flannel duvet cover is coming out! I love me the goose down duvet…
Oh and my overabundance of boots and coats. Winter wear (layers!) is the best!
If you want some great wool blankets, don’t shell out for Pendleton (unless you have the extra cash) – head on over to Andy and Bax and pick up some Austrian or South African army wool blankets. I got one about 15 years ago. Don’t use it too much anymore, but it is still in good condition and I think it was under $10 then.
After taking a 10 year vacation from PDX I remembered an expression I had for this time of year, “malaria season.” And here comes the science:
In the morning it’s sweet-jebus-in-a-birchbark-canoe cold and damp… so, on goes the long underwear, long sleeve shirt, short sleeve shirt, and my cold weather biker dickey (NO, not that kind of dickey no not that kind of biker) plus the insulated gloves.
Now, come 5pm and I’m released from my daily grind only to find Sofa King warm out. The dickey goes to the already stuffed backpack along with the short sleeved shirt. The long underwear I’m too lazy to deal with removing.
I had a point… oh yeah… it gets cold, then hot, then cold again… malaria.
I look forward to when the weather finally makes up it’s mind just to be cold and stay that way… I even look forward to the rain.
I’m completely passionate about wool as well. I picked up this weird preoccupation with it after moving to Portland.
I love Smart Wool, but they’re a little expensive. I’m always on the lookout for a substitute.
And what’s the story about wool things made in Oregon? Are the Pendleton blankets really still made here?
