The Perfect Combination
I made my now-usual, one-two shopping trip this morning: Grocery Outlet and the Hollywood Farmer’s Market.
“Huh-wha…,” you wonder? “That’s got to be the most dissonant pairing around: Off-price, over-packaged, over-processed food full of high-fructose corn syrup trucked in from thousands of miles away, paired with local organic produce grown by our neighboring farmers. Nice move, brainiac.”
Well, if you haven’t been to the new Grocery Outlet right behind the Hollywood Farmer’s Market (where Value Village used to be), I suppose you can be forgiven for your erroneous assumptions. And sure, they still have the Island of Misfit Toy products on some of their shelves—the Fear Factor push-ups in the frozen food section, the fluorescent neon green boxes of sugary cereal with their special packaging tie-ins to long-gone summer movies. (Sayonara, Kung Fu Panda…)
But they also had fresh-picked local Fuji Farms blackberries, at 2 pints for 4 dollars (the farmer wanted to unload the rest of his produce rather than cart it back home, I was told.) An entire section of organic food items (I got my regular Kashi GoLean Crunch cereal—the breakfast of champions—for a mere buck fifty), or Umpqua dairy products in the refrigerator case.
I was able to pick up several items that will work for future weekday lunches—Imagine roasted corn soup in a carton, prosciutto at rock-bottom prices. Finally, it’s my go-to place to restock the pistachio bowl I have on the table near my desk at work; better than candy, no?
The best part—I saved close to 30 bucks buying my 40 dollars’ worth of food. Which means I can now head over to the Farmer’s Market and buy white organic peaches or heirloom tomatoes with a (mostly) clear conscience.
And those blackberries? Dee-lish. In fact, they’re even sweeter knowing I didn’t have to take out a small loan to buy them elsewhere…!

Grocery Outlet rules! I go for the giant cartons of granola.
You don’t have to sell me on the virtues of Grocery Outlet. Ok, so I used to call it The Used Food Store (well, I stole that from my father-in-law, thank you very much Bruce), but now, after many low cost organic meals and not-too-terrible wine, you are preaching to the converted!!
I think Wizard and I are venturing to Grocery Outlet tonight. We’ll report back on our finds. Gotta find a Grocery Outlet or similar in 19010.
