PARKing day
Originally uploaded by dieselboi

Out today, I came upon this PARK setup in a parking spot up off SW 10th and Alder. I love it! I remember reading about similar events where people use sod to set up a temporary park on the street. This group even had a paid parking sticker for the spot.

We need more places like this on a day like today. Too bad the rains are on the way. Check them out at parkingday.org

  1. Yeah, I saw one over by my office, as well, on SW 2nd, in front of the old police building. They had built a deck out of wooden palettes, and had all sorts of potted shrubs and grasses from … oh, I forget where. A local nursery.

I have to admit, I was more intrigued by the general notion of putting a non-car in a parking space than for whatever the point of this was. (I don’t drive to work, anyhow.)

There was someone who claimed to be affiliated with this particular parking spot makeover sitting in a chair there, and I asked if she’d gotten a permit, and she said no, but the parking vehicle and police cars had passed by and done nothing (they did have a collection of parking stickers on a pole). She did point out, however, that they’d clearly violated the 90 minute term of the spot.

Still, it makes me wonder: could this be a way to evade the sit-lie ordinance (albeit an expensive one)? Can you camp in a parking spot? How about after 7pm, when it’s free? How about throwing random parties not affiliated with PARK(ing) Day? The mind boggles …

  2. Glad to hear that Portland had some. I was wondering. Take a gander at our NYC Streetfilm on PARKing Day if you wish:
