Gresham: WTF?
Today’s news is that Gresham’s city council is voting tonight to change city code to extend driveways in order to accommodate larger vehicles like Hummers and full size pickups. What the Fuck? And no, I’m not using the WTF here. I guess there is a HUGE problem in Gresham with vehicles extending past the driveway into the sidewalk area. This problem is the driveways in Gresham are too small for giant monster trucks (insert penis size jokes here.) The O reported the story this morning and I actually thought it was a joke. Then I saw the story on KATU this evening and they were serious. They even showed a couple of proud owners of some amazingly huge trucks and Hummers that took up not only the driveway but the lawn too.
I want to ask - who actually devised this idea? With gas prices what they are and the America figuring out alternatives, I can’t believe Gresham is going to change their building codes to actually encourage larger vehicles. Next up, I wonder if they will allow McDonald’s and Taco Bell to take over school cafeterias. Oh, wait, they’ve probably already done that.
Oh my. Isn’t that just gross? And then on the other side of the spectrum, we have this lovely story and example. So inspiring!
That sort of backward thinking doesn’t surprise me much. Most of the streets outside downtown Gresham don’t even have sidewalks.
I’m not going to knock Gresham for not having sidewalks, have you been out to the Cully neighborhood in Portland? They barely have streets. But to change city code so people can drive larger vehicles is just crazy.
