Spotted in PDX

Tagging Downtown

A tagger took advantage of the temporary scaffolding that is up along Fifth Avenue to apply a big ugly piece of graffiti overnight. It stands out all the more because this is a neighborhood that is usually pleasantly devoid of this kind of social statement.

I can only assume that the owners of the Men’s Wearhouse at 5th and Taylor are less than happy about it.

Now that someone has taken the first step, I wonder that it has taken this long for it to happen. Needless to say, when considering tagging and most other graffiti, I find myself at the “vandalism” end of the spectrum that runs from “urban art” to “property damage”.

  1. It’s a big problem. The best thing to do is to paint over it right away so they don’t have the satisfaction of seeing their handiwork.

  2. I like well done graffiti. I’m mostly drawn to work that requires high skill, painstaking planning, or at the very least makes a strong statement in support of some cause (banksy, etc.). That tag is just awful. Very poorly done and makes no statement other than “don’t leave your scaffolding here”.

  3. Damn kids stole my engine again!
