Tears of Joy Theatre is a Portland institution; a children’s theatre company that offers intelligent and professional productions for children not just in Portland, but all over the northwest. They are one of the resident companies at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, and nationally recognized and respected for the quality of their puppets and puppetry.
They are also a non-profit organization, which makes it all the more heartbreaking that someone stole many of the puppets used in their original production, “Little One-Inch”.
The theft of anything is a disaster for a non-profit, but these puppets were exquisitely crafted and unique works of art that took months to create. Worse yet, the next performance of “Little One-Inch” is scheduled for mid-September, leaving virtually no time to craft replacements for one of TOJT’s most popular touring shows.
If you want to help Tears of Joy, donations are always welcome (non-profit, remember?), and you can contact them directly at (503) 248-0557 or (360) 695-3050. But there’s another way to support TOJT and have a nice evening at the same time.
The 2nd Annual Tears of Joy Benefit Dinner is scheduled for September 16th at Wongs King Restaurant. Tickets cost $40, which includes a $20 tax-deductible donation, which is not much for a really excellent meal and the chance to support the local arts, as well as local children. After the disappointment of the recent theft, wouldn’t it be wonderful if Tears of Joy could sell out their benefit dinner?
