“I’ll Drink Your Milkshake!”

This post has nothing to do with There Will Be Blood, or films with Cher. But there will be movie references o’plenty.

From Pulp Fiction: Vincent Vega:”Did you just order a five dollar milkshake?”

Mia Wallace: “Yes.”

VV: “No bourbon or nothin’ in it? Just a milkshake?”

The thought of a five dollar milkshake used to boggle the mind. (Like paying for bottled water. Who’da thunk?) But today I beheld the magic of an almost $5 milkshake.

A friend was waiting for the new iPhone yesterday. I got a message stating she was in line at Pioneer Place mall. Hours later I was walking through said mall, saw the line still numbering near one hundred, and figured I’d offer to bring coffee or hold her spot in line for a few minutes. I couldn’t find her, but it gave me an excuse to go to Moonstruck. While I have nothing against Starbucks, the Moonstruck kiosk has become my new java-junkie scoring spot.

Their quadruple mocha lattes are quite tasty, served with a disc of chocolate atop the sippy lid. A triple shot of espresso over ice is $2; add a splash of half & half and you’ve got a smooth blast of liquid meth. I indulge in these delights frequently, but yesterday was payday, and I was feeling the urge to go out for a drink. Something different. Since I couldn’t recall the last time I’d had a milkshake, WTF. I’ll give Moonstruck a try.

While it wasn’t quite five bucks on the menu, after tip it was. I saw the 12 oz cup and thought it looked a bit small. (We live in a Big Gulp society, sadly.) But once I got that frosty little bugger in my hands? Heavenly!

Smooth, chocolaty, with tiny ice crystals. The 12-gauge straw allowed for easy access. (I hate having to suck so hard that you get a headache from that instead of the delicious brain freeze.) Topped with whipped cream, sprinkled with chocolate shavings and garnished with a dark chocolate disc that makes a fine reward at the bottom of the glass, it was the perfect dose of refreshment on this 90-degree day.

As Vincent Vega would say, “That’s a pretty (bleep)ing good milkshake. I don’t know if it’s worth five dollars, but it’s a pretty (bleep)ing good milkshake!”

I also tried a $5 shake from Moonstruck on a whim one day in the Beave. I, being ever the chocoholic, opted for whatever sounded most chocolaty and it was good. My wife, on the other hand, went with some sort of chocolate root beer thing which *sounded* awful but *tasted* wonderful. Considering that Baskin Robbins now charges about the same for a corn syrup mainline in a cup, I think we got a fair deal.
