A Sad End to a Beautiful Day

Whether it was natural selection or a final solution to a temporary problem, this day did not end well for somebody.

On the way home, just before midnight, the Hawthorne Bridge shut down. Buses and traffic were rerouted. After waiting an hour, we were on a bus.

What I could see:

The east end of the Hawthorne Bridge was blocked off heading westbound, though no traffic was going in either direction. The area near the dock by the fire station was spotlighted, and boats were searching the river.

What I heard:

That two young men had been drinking and decided to jump in the river from the bridge, but only one came back up. We heard this from a bicyclist who passed through on the bridge sidewalk. I called work to see if anyone had heard anything or seen TriMet supervisors, who theoretically would know what was going on. Nada.

Whatever happened, I wish the families of those involved the best.
